Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses that can cause cold and flu symptoms that range in severity from mild to very severe. COVID-19 is a coronavirus that has not previously been recognised in humans. We are still learning about this new illness and how it works.

It is very difficult to tell the difference between a common cold and COVID-19 because for most people the symptoms will be exactly the same. These symptoms can include fever, cough, sore throat, runny/blocked nose, and fatigue/tiredness. Like a common cold, for many people the illness will pass and can be safely managed at home with symptom relief as required.
For a minority of patients (less than 10%), COVID-19 will be a more serious illness that may cause troubles with breathing and much more. These patients might require more intensive medical treatment, such as hospitalisation. For more information about who is most at risk of serious illness with COVID-19, click here.
